Preparing for ISO 27001 certification means being able to explain the information security management system and provide evidence of how it operates. There is no useful substitute for understanding the work within its scope and the responsibilities involved.
Agree what is being assessed
Start by describing the activities and boundaries proposed for certification. Discuss the scope, relevant locations, dependencies and audit arrangements with the certification body. The applicable standard edition and any customer-specific accreditation requirement should be clear.
Make the evidence traceable
An illustrative trail might connect a risk assessment with a decision about a safeguard, the person responsible for operating it and records showing what happened. The auditor may sample different evidence according to the scope and risks; a document checklist alone cannot establish that the system works.
People should be able to explain their responsibilities and how they deal with issues in practice. Where information is handled by a supplier or contractor, the organisation should be able to describe the relevant arrangements and its oversight.
Complete the organisation's own evaluation
Internal audits and management review help the organisation evaluate its system and decide on improvements. Where a problem has been identified, retain evidence of the investigation, action and checks on effectiveness. The independent audit does not take over management's responsibility for those activities.
Understand the external assessment
The certification body explains the audit programme and how findings, review and the certification decision are handled. Internal audit is part of the organisation's evaluation; it is not itself the external certification decision.
Be prepared to discuss the evidence sampled and respond through the agreed findings process. Certification is not automatic after an audit or payment, and it does not guarantee that no security incident will occur.
Maintain the system after certification
Changes in services, people and information risks need ongoing attention. Confirm the continuing audit arrangements and keep the system operating between external visits. A certificate should reflect the stated scope, not be treated as a permanent sign-off for future changes.
AAA provides independent ISO 27001 certification audits. Your organisation remains responsible for implementing its system, selecting suitable safeguards and meeting its obligations. Tell us about your organisation for an indicative price or send a readiness enquiry. Certification follows an audit and an independent decision.
