A business may seek ISO 27001 certification to provide independent assurance about its information security management system. The decision should begin with the organisation's activities, information, risks and customer requirements, rather than a promise that a certificate will make it immune to incidents.

Describe what the system covers

What services, people, locations and information are included? An illustrative audit question is whether the stated scope matches the work being delivered to a customer and the relevant dependencies. A narrow certificate should not be presented as assurance over unrelated activities.

Connect decisions with evidence

The management system should support decisions about information security. An auditor can examine how the organisation identifies and evaluates a risk, decides on its response and keeps responsibilities clear. The specific safeguards need to be considered in their operational context.

For example, a review could follow a change in a person's access to business information. Who authorised it, what happened when their role changed and what records show that the arrangement worked? This is an example of an audit trail, not a universal technical specification.

Evaluate how the system works

Internal audit, management review, objectives and corrective action provide information about the organisation's system. They should support decisions and follow-up, rather than exist only as documents to show an external auditor.

An independent certification body audits the implemented system and makes a separate certification decision. ISO develops standards; it does not issue the organisation's certificate. Accreditation concerns the certification body's competence and does not replace the organisation's own internal audit.

Check the fit before committing

Confirm the proposed scope, applicable edition, accreditation requirements and audit arrangements. A certificate does not automatically meet every customer, legal or sector-specific requirement. Costs, timetable and continuing arrangements should be understood before entering the programme.
