Why Investing in ISO 27001 is a Vital Step for Protecting Personal Data and Avoiding Costly Penalties.

ISO 27001 certification assesses an information security management system within an agreed scope. It does not, by itself, certify compliance with every data-protection obligation or protect an organisation from regulatory action.

Establish the applicable responsibilities

The UK GDPR and EU GDPR are distinct frameworks. An organisation should establish which rules apply to its activities and processing, rather than treating an individual's nationality as the sole test. The ICO provides guidance on UK GDPR scope and on the different responsibilities of controllers and processors.

Identify the processing being considered, the organisation's role and the relevant obligations before deciding what assurance is needed. This article describes audit considerations; it is not an assessment of a particular organisation's legal position.

Use security evidence in context

The ICO's data-security guidance describes a risk-based approach to appropriate technical and organisational measures. In an illustrative audit trail, an auditor might follow the handling of a personal-information record and examine the organisation's access decisions, responsibilities and evidence of review.

A security control should not be treated as effective merely because it has a familiar name. Ask how the organisation decided what was suitable, who operates it and what evidence supports its assessment of effectiveness.

Understand the certification being offered

The ICO distinguishes its UK GDPR certification schemes from other standards and certifications. Existing ISO 27001 evidence may be relevant to another assessment, but that does not turn an ISO 27001 certificate into an ICO-approved UK GDPR certificate.

Be clear about the scope and criteria of any certification being requested. A customer asking about information security may also need evidence about particular processing activities and data-protection arrangements beyond the management-system certificate.

Keep the evidence current

A change in how information is used, shared or stored can prompt further review. Audit questions can explore how the organisation identifies such changes and involves the people responsible for security and data protection. Use current regulatory guidance and competent advice for the circumstances concerned.

AAA provides independent ISO 27001 certification audits. Your organisation remains responsible for implementing its system, selecting suitable safeguards and meeting its obligations. Tell us about your organisation for an indicative price or send a readiness enquiry. Certification follows an audit and an independent decision.
