On 25 September 2025, Knowsley Council reported that Asda Stores Ltd had been fined £130,000 and ordered to pay £11,000 in costs following a prosecution concerning its Huyton store.
The council’s inspections took place on 14 February and 20 March 2024. Officers found 59 food items offered for sale after their use-by dates. The council said earlier warnings had not led to adequate arrangements for removing expired products.
What this illustrates about quality management
For a retailer, a routine check is only useful when it reliably leads to action. A management system can make responsibility, checking methods and escalation routes clear, while providing evidence that problems are followed through.
Define who does what
An audit might examine who checks stock, how checks cover different shifts and product areas, and what staff do when they identify an unsuitable item. Records can support that assessment, but observation and discussion with staff help establish whether the process works in practice.
Investigate recurring failures
When a problem recurs after a warning, repeating the same instruction may be insufficient. Managers should investigate why the process failed and verify whether the corrective action addresses the cause. Results from checks and customer feedback can inform management review.
Understand the limits of certification
ISO 9001 is a quality management system standard. Its relevance here is the discipline of managing processes, reviewing evidence and improving performance. It does not replace food-safety requirements or establish that a particular product is safe. This article makes no assertion about Asda’s certification status.
