Edition review - 24 October 2026: ISO has published ISO 14001:2026. The original publication date is retained. Ask AAA to confirm the edition and certification arrangements applicable to your proposed audit; publication of a new edition does not establish AAA's accredited scope or a certificate transition deadline. See ISO's current edition information.
Extended producer responsibility for packaging can create reporting and financial obligations for businesses within its scope. The obligations depend on the organisation's activities and circumstances. An environmental management system can help organise the evidence and responsibilities, but certification does not determine whether a business is legally compliant.
Establish which requirements apply
Use the current government guidance to determine the producer's position and applicable requirements. Group arrangements, packaging activities and the relevant reporting year can matter. Do not rely on an old article's summary of dates or thresholds when making a current compliance decision.
The official EPR collection brings together guidance on the scheme, data and fees. PackUK administers waste disposal fees. Registration, reporting and payment responsibilities need to be checked against the current arrangements applying to the business.
Make the data trail understandable
As an illustrative audit trail, an auditor could select a reported packaging item and follow it back to the business records used to classify and quantify it. Who owns the data, where did it originate and what checks were completed before submission?
If information comes from a supplier, the business needs a way to manage its reliability and deal with changes or missing details. A spreadsheet total alone may not explain the underlying assumptions. The audit question is whether the organisation's arrangements work, rather than whether it uses a particular software package.
Connect changes to responsibility
A new product, material or supplier can affect the information needed. Who checks the implications and ensures the responsible people know what has changed? Internal review can help identify gaps before the next reporting cycle.
Keep certification and legal compliance distinct
ISO 14001 can provide a framework for managing environmental responsibilities and evaluating the system. It does not exempt a business from EPR, guarantee acceptance of its data or prevent enforcement. Technical or legal questions about an obligation should be resolved using the applicable guidance and competent advice.
AAA provides independent ISO 14001 certification audits. Your organisation remains responsible for designing and operating its management system and meeting its legal obligations. Tell us about your organisation for an indicative price or send a readiness enquiry. Certification follows an audit and an independent decision.
